5 Youthful Things That Age You

by Christina Jones on November 19th, 2007

sandra-bullock-chandelier-earringFrom an article yesterday in the Seattle Times is a list of five bad habits that we pick up in our youth (20’s) that will age you prematurely. Yuck. Some are the classics, but there are a couple of different ones in here. So, don’t do these things, ok?

1. Wear high heels every day - this will lead to damaged and painful body pain - back, joints, shoulders, and tendons. Ouch.

2. Binge drinking - we all know this is bad. Have you ever seen an old drunk? They don’t look so good. I shudder to think what their livers look like. Go see The Bodies exhibit if you want to see.

3. Smoking - can I get a witness? Ugh. The bane of my existance. The lung exhibit at The Bodies ain’t so cute either. Plus smoking leads to wrinkle city. Don’t start, so you don’t have to stop.

4. Tanning - ooooh this is bad. I am thinking of a girl I went to school with from 2nd grade on - she had a savage tan at ages 10, 15, and 20, and now she looks 20 years older than me at 39. Hope she enjoyed herself in her bronzed youth. ;)

5. Wearing heavy earrings - ha - here is one you don’t hear often, but just the other day, I saw an older woman (probably around 60) that had big ol long stretched out earlobes AND earring holes. It really wasn’t cute, and beyond plastic surgery, what are you going to do about it?

i did # 2 & 3 in my 20s, #1 in my 30s (but for a few years only, 2003-2006). i ever wore heels before Raine on a daily basis (only on special occassions) but after I gave birth, I did. maybe post-partum depression?!

never tanned or wore heavy earrings.

I usually wear big and heavy earrings. Now that I’m aware of what I might look like after few more years, I guess I would just stick at wearing nice cute pearl earrings or better yet small diamond earrings.

HA! I know a tanner - and my friends and I call her “luggage face” - she’s only in her forties - but looks MUCH older!

I think I may be proof that this works - although I would add that regularly getting enough sleep and genetics play a part also.

I am 51 years old, everyone assumes I am in my “early thirties”, if the subject ever comes up and they learn my age they literally argue with me.

    1. Am 5′9″ tall, have been since I was 13 years old, so no high heels for me … ever.

    2. Always hated the feeling of being drunk, more fun to watch everyone else anyway.

    3. Did this one, but only smoked one here or there.

    4. Owe my Mom for this one - she was a rabid sunscreen freak - I was always “greased up” even as a toddler. Became a habit and I can’t tan anyway - am the pastey-white northern-european type.

    5. Never liked them so never wore them.

So I guess it was just dumb luck for me. :)

Excellent list. I’ve given up heavy earrings, alcohol, cigarettes, and the sun. But high heels? I don’t know, I just don’t know if I can do that…

Many of us wish to look younger but we never expect that youthful things can make us look older than our age. I can say that you have the exact list. Thank you for posting because it helps a lot.
