A Beauty Rant

I hate to rant, I really do, but there are some things that just need to be put out there, just in case you might not know that this is bad.
We are talking hair color here. Please, if you are going to color your hair, touch up your new growth on at least a semi regular basis. But this really is not my rant. Blondes with dark roots are not THAT horrible. What is horrible is what I saw yesterday. A young dark haired woman with shoulder length hair with about 2 inches of very gray roots, and with her hair pulled up in a barrette. I wish I had been brazen enough to take a picture, because I just can’t find one online that shows you how awful it looks. If I thought she was trying to grow her hair out to her natural color, I really wouldn’t rant, although there are much better ways to do it than this. But she was probably about 35, and I know she was just being lazy.
In the interest of me not sounding like a total slug, I will admit to you this (ouch) - at age 37, I am prematurely gray. My natural hair color is about 60% gray at this point, with those lovely Morticia Adams-esque pure white streaks at the temples. I am sure it will be lovely when I am 75, but I assure you, it isn’t now. So, I have faithfully colored that ugly stuff every 3 weeks ever since. Well, I colored it anyway..lol…but I haven’t missed it since I was 20 (when the gray was first noticed by one of my nail clients - that is the down side to having a lamp over your head and your head down while working right in front of someone).
I am going to spend a bit of time in the next couple of days talking about hair color, so I don’t wind up making this post a mile long, so be prepared. And, please, if you are running around with gray roots, go take a moment and get them taken care of. Especially if you are under 50.

Everyone deserves to have a good rant every now and again.
Why do you colour your grey? I can understand why most women feel the need to, but I actually believe it’s quite lovely on some ladies and gives them a very distinguished look that sets them apart.
While I’m sure the young lady you were speaking about didn’t look too hot with dark hair and grey roots, but I’m sure your “Morticia Adams-esque” look isn’t so bad :)

Ha! I am a young 37, and not NEAR ready to be gray headed just yet! :) I hope it will be beautiful, like I said, when I am 75, or even 60, but nope, not yet. Dirty blonde and gray. Yucko - even with Morticia Adams-esque white temple streaks (that distinguishing look shows through my blonde hair color anyway…)! I will wait til it all turns gray, and then a few years probably. That stuff isn’t going to see the light of day for another 20 years if I can help it. :) It is funny how I am so anti-plastic surgery, but am all for haircoloring! We will see how my views on plastic surgery change as I age. LOL I hope you had a great New Year, and thanks again for stopping by!!

I still don’t believe you can possibly have as much gray as you insist you have. But IMHO, better to have gray that you can color, than bald spots and scalp injections.

Suz - Ill give you Sami Parker’s number, she can tell you. :) She was the first one to notice my hair “in the glowing light of the manicure table,” and I have shown her each one as it came in for all of these years. LOL But, isn’t this is a good testament to my touching up my hair every 3 weeks like clockwork - even my bestest friend doesn’t know they are there! Ha ha!

Every three weeks can be pretty costly, but it is necessary. Premature grey hair sure keeps the beauty industry afloat.

Yes, it can. But that is something to consider when coloring your hair in the first place. And a very good reason to learn how to DIY! It costs me probably a total of about $2.50 and that is on the high side! Another good topic to address! :) Thanks so much for stopping by, hope to see you back again soon!

gray hair can be a nuisance but then again i would rather gray hair than be bald, so i believe in hair today gone tomorow. We always look after our hair as much as we can dont we ladies.

You bet we do! I do want to point out that in no way do I think gray hair is ugly…that is not my rant at all. For me, personally, I feel way too young to have gray hair- it just in no way fits my personal style at this point - so have decided that I won’t just yet. ;) But hang with me til I’m 60 or so and hopefully you will see me aging gracefully with a gorgeous head of gray/white hair!
Thanks so much for coming by and commenting!

I have used hair colour from a young age as i went grey early, what i think though is once you start to use hair colour it makes your hair reliant on the stuff there for you have to keep uses it more and more as your grey comes through quicker every time.

Oiy! This is a depressing topic for me! lol…makes me think I need to get some body de-cluttering counsel from FlyLady.
I can be so lazy when it comes to touch ups (as in currently) that I have a 1/4 inch of brown regrowth, caramel base color and blonde hightlights.
It is a 3 hour commitment at the salon…and while my stylist is a hottie, he’s not that hot…and his conversations can be a little boring. lol
But a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do…

Oh thats nothing :) I won’t rant about that at all. That poor woman I was ranting about needed some serious work!! You know you can get your new growth just retouched with your base color and just get highlights every few months. You don’t have to wait until you need everything done. And stay tuned for home touch up suggestions coming up next week!

[…] Since you all seemed to enjoy my last rant, here is another one. This one was pointed out to me by my husband several years ago, and, as usual, he was very right in noticing this. We call this look “The Eagle Toe,” and although it most often is seen on strippers (er…exotic dancers) wearing wayyyyyy too small shoes and wayyyyyy too tall heels, it can be spotted fairly regularly in your very own neighborhood. You know how a bird grips a branch, with its toes wrapped around it? So does a woman wearing too-small-strappy-sandals. This picture, via the Manolo, is of Queen Latifah. Doesn’t her poor foot look like it is screaming in pain? Queen does not strike me as a woman who would put herself through any fashion pain, but the proof is in the pudding. […]

One possible reason for that woman offending your sensibilities is that she is pregnant. When one of m prematurely (31!) gray friends became pregnant she stopped dying her hair and we all saw how gray she really was. Her opinion was it was better to offend people for 9 months then risk the health of her child. Something to think about.

I suppose you are correct, Lexi - I just had a superficial day - that comes out of me not “too” often, but I am only human. On a related note, I do not share the opinion that hair color harms your unborn child - this is not anywhere near a proven fact. I colored my hair through both of my pregnancies, and would not hesitate to do it again. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment!

[…] This is my newest love, Bumble and bumble Hair Powder. You *might* remember my rant from a few months ago about the woman with the monstrous gray roots that offended me so (well, I am not that easily offended, it was just a lil’ rant…LOL). I was that woman the week before my high school reunion a few weeks ago, because I didn’t want to color my hair until the day before my reunion - and it needed it, badly. If you don’t know this about me, I am sickeningly prematurely gray, so when my medium blonde hair begins to grow out, pure white hairs, nearly 100% around my face, start twinkling just the minute they see the light. I color my hair faithfully every 3 weeks. […]

Gray Roots, as we know, are difficult to cover and half the products out there don’t work. I did find one that does however, Colormark.
