A Skinny Model Rant

by Christina Jones on January 30th, 2007

skinny-model-debate [2]With Fashion Week coming up, once again I keep hearing all of this talk about the skinny models, and anorexia and they are not eating healthy and this and that. I think I have mentioned before how I hate seeing someone that looks like a skeleton on the runway, I just don’t think it looks good. Someone obviously thinks they make great clothes hangers, but I get distracted looking at their knee and elbows and how they are bigger than their thighs. Gross.

Anyway, thats not my real rant. I have had a couple of friends over the years that spent their formidable years modeling, traveling the world, and from what I know from them and from my own life experiences and things I see and have seen, the problem is not anorexia, the problem is drugs. Hello? Why isn’t anyone talking about the drugs?

WWD is talking about how it isn’t the fashion industry’s fault these gals have eating disorders. Some blame it on Hollywood. I blame it on all the people that know full well that the whole industry (fashion AND Hollywood) is using hard drugs (crystal meth, cocaine, heroin) and is turning a casual eye to it. Wake up people. I guess its going to take another celeb overdose or two for we, as laymen, to pay attention to this problem and turn our suspicious eye towards the folks that are letting it go on.

Oh get over yourselves. Does it really bother you that much? If you find them too skinny, then just don’t look at them. I would rather see them then the ocasional obese woman they have coming down the runway attempting to show that designers dress every day women as well…these are the unhealthy women if you ask me. Just face the fact that this is what it is. It is the women that don’t look like models who are complaining…but if they did, they would probably keep quiet.
    Leave it alone already.

Kristina - nah. If you don’t like it, don’t read about it. :) Thanks for the comment!

    Hi Christina,
    Love your blog!
And as to the topic du jour, you are right, sorta.
Anorexia, and drugs, are only the symptoms, not the problem.

Why do the girls take drugs? To keep from eating.

Why do the girls seem to be anorexic? Because that is what the market demands: Slimness is next to godliness.

A woman could be a drug addict, an idiot,
    a pauper, a prostitute, a child abuser, a ‘fill- in-the blank,’ but if she’s thin, she’s hot.

Conversely, a woman could be a saint, brilliant, talented, a philanthropist, but if she’s overweight, she’s nothing in the eyes of the world.

It is not politically correct to make jokes about a person’s ethnic background, their country of origin, their lack of education, their sexuality, but anyone who is overweight is the punch line of many jokes.

I cannot appreciate the beauty in a girl who looks like a survivor of a concentration camp.
“Don’t look at them!” Well… they are all over: television, movies, magazines, blogs. This focus on thin-ness sets up an unhealthy standard for little girls. Even girls as young as 6 are worried about being obese. Something is terribly wrong with a culture that puts so much emphasis on thin appearance.

I almost lost my dear daughter to anorexia. I see this illness in too many wonderfully talented young girls who feel inferior because they don’t look like Kate Moss. This illness is almost an epidemic in our culture.

I feel some hope when I see the lovely Jennifer Hudson applauded for her talent; when “Ugly Betty” is the top lauded television program. But we have so far to go!

Sorry about the rant, Christina. We must get to a place where all beauty is lauded. Youe blog holds up a wide view of beauty, with a sense of humor!
    Thanks!

Rant away Donna. I try not to complain around here too much, but sometimes I just gotta let it out. :) I totally agree with your points - and I am sooooooo glad that your daughter is ok. Anorexia is a horrible disease, as you well know. The drug use I am referring to above is a preventable problem that everyone is ignoring. That is so scary to me too.

Wow - thank you so much for this. I completely agree with you, and it’s a pet peeve of mine also. I don’t necessarily mind the skinniness - I understand that the clothes do tend to hang better… I just have a problem with the way it’s achieved - careful and healthy diets and exercise would work, but the industry allows less-disciplined methods, like drugs, and some models turn to them as a weight-loss measure. It’s a self-perpetuating cycle, and it’s very dangerous.

i totally agree with what you are saying cause i am a size zero and i think that the only people complaining about my weight are the obese or otherwise fat women they are just jealous of my body.

Thats for sure, Rachel. I get all kinds of hate mail when the “a” word comes out in a post, but its scary and dangerous. And whether it is an illness you have, or are doing it consciously via drug use - it is scary and extremely unhealthy. Not to mention VERY un-beautiful!
