Beauty is SO much more than skin deep!

by Christina Jones on December 31st, 2005

This article, from USATODAY.com, Beauty obsession unites divided Venezuela, sure brings to light some debatable topics.   Here is a snip:

In Venezuela, beauty isn’t necessarily something you’re born with — it’s a pursuit that has evolved into an industry, a national obsession, a staple of daily life.

Beauty salons and spas outnumber drugstores in Caracas telephone listings; women unabashedly apply full makeup in packed subways; teenagers are known to get breast jobs as their traditional “quinceanera” coming-of-age gift at age 15; Venezuelans consistently place among the finalists in the Miss Universe pageant.

First, I wonder what about Venezuela (and much of South America, for that matter) has turned them into such true “slaves to beauty.”   I have no idea really.  This article also brings to light how they value beauty over intellect.  I was just, last night, talking to my 11 year old daughter about how very important it is to chose a boyfriend/husband for what is inside of their head, rather than on the outside.  Sure, if you can get both brains and beauty, all the better, but what is inside is what are going to make a relationship lifelong and satisfying.  After all, even Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are divorced.  It reminds me of a poster that I saw one time that had a gorgeous man pictured, and the caption said something along the lines of:  “No matter how gorgeous you are, there is someone in the world that is sick of your shit” (pardon :) ).

I don’t know, maybe these types of people are happier living with themselves than with anyone else, and looking at themselves in the mirror gives them more pleasure than the company of another person….

Beauty is harder to maintain, and is appreciated more than intellect. Isn’t it easier to try to be smart when you’re already beautiful or is it easier to try to be beautiful when you’re already smart?

And most likely, if you’re already beautiful, you can get more things than just intelligence easier - and that means one’s pursuit of happiness.

When you see a picture or several pictures of beautiful Venezuelan women, do they look discontent? No. They look like everyone else around the world, but beautiful indeed, because they’ve maintained their beauty.

Hi JD - I respect your opinion, but totally disagree with you. Beauty is fleeting and superficial and quite easy to come by and maintain. All you need is a little knowledge and sometimes some money (assuming you are wanting to have surgery to look the way you want to look).

Intelligence is more of a gift - not something you can “get” because you are beautiful - and definitely requires much more difficult maintenance. Of course difficult and easy are all relative. I see it as really easy to go through surgery and a whole lot more effort (and rewarding as well) to learn something new, intellectually speaking.

I am also not so sure that you can “try” to be intelligent if you are not - if you can, it is probably one of the most difficult things you can do, but you certainly can “try” to be beautiful - and that is a whole easier.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment, JD!
