Curls for Girls - Part 4 - Supporting Products
To build a curly hairstyle that is going to last, you must use a combination of products to help hold the curl. Here is where we start with a mousse or a gel. When your hair is damp, work a palm-full of mousse (or a lot less gel) through the hair, from the scalp to the ends, and then comb it through so it is evenly distributed.
You can find products that are specially designed for your hair type. Someone with fine hair, for example, would not want a heavy product such as a thick gel, because the sheer weight of the gel will pull the curl right out of your hair. You might try a spray gel, which is much lighter and less messy. I really do prefer a gel over a mouse when trying to achieve curls, because it just seems to retain the shape of the curls better than a mousse. Try one, and if it doesn’t work as well as you would like, do try another. There are a bazillion products in this genre, and most of them work–the trick is to find the one that works for YOU. Paul Mitchell is generally where I start looking, because I truly have never met a Paul Mitchell product that I didn’t like. They make a great lightweight gel, spray gel, and mousse (as well as dozens of other very good products).

This is my problem…if I get something to hold it, it’s stiff and icky, while a lovely ’soft’ product drops the curls fast. There must be a combination of the two! This post reminded of when you’d go to prom, etc…and you’d dump 3 cans of hairspray on your hair because it HAD to hold…and you couldn’t even get your brush through your hair later. :) Our poor hair.

There is a happy medium, you have to find the right products for you. I really suggest you try a spray gel–it is lighter than a thick gel, but has more hold than most mousses (is that a word–or is it mice? LOL). The right combination of products, with the right techniques will work without giving you "prom hair (yes, I remember–Aqua Net, 1 can minimum)."

I 100% swear by Aveda Be Curly. It makes it look like I just woke up with gorgeous, frizz-free curls — none of the gross crunchies you get with mousse/gel. Also, it smells great :)

Thanks so much for the info, Banana Esq - I really need to get back to Aveda, they have such wonderful products and it has been several years since I have used any of them. :)
