Curvy Girls Alert!
If you haven’t seen the latest Dove promotion in Australia, it is definitely worth taking a look at. Dove is sponsoring a Curvy Calendar Girls contest, as part of their promotion of their Firming Range line of products. In the product line you will find a Firming Lotion, an Intensive Cellulite Gel-Cream and a Firming Body Wash. Who couldn’t use those–curvy or not!
Dove has this to say about their promotion:
For too long beauty has been defined by narrow stereotypes and we think it’s time to change all that.
We understand that real beauty comes in many shapes and sizes. That’s why we want you to take part in our Curvy Calendar Girl promotion - a 2006 calendar which will be featured in madison magazine!
We’re after women to enter photos of themselves (either on their own or with a group of friends) showing off their body and their curves in underwear or swimmers (no matter how big or small).
Help Dove Firming debunk beauty stereotypes. But hurry, entries close October 10th 2005.
At any rate, with all of the uber-waifs running around the world these days (a-la Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan and the folks in the Corpse Bride movie!) it is mighty nice to see someone celebrating the beauty of “real” women. Cheers to Dove for trying to reverse this scary trend!

This sounds really neat and a refreshing change from Ms. Twiggy, but I can’t imagine myself sending in a photo of me in a bathing suit to something like this….not in million, jillion years!!

Dude, this is what I get for being late to the party. I TOTALLY would have sent undies pictures in.
I’m all for the adds they’ve been running and I keep pointing out to people that the girls they show aren’t "fat" women, they just aren’t "skinny" women.
Yay skinny women, but YAY normal women, too! Yah?

Not really. I was just born without a sense of physical shame.
It’s not always a good thing. But in this case I might use my powers for the force instead of the dark side.

[…] Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign, Analyzed By Christina Jones | Related entries in Uncategorized I am really not sure where Peter Frost is trying to go in this article from Media Week referring to Dove’s Real Beauty campaign, which we discussed here back in September. He seems to think these “real women” are comparable to “beer belly chasing couch potatoes.” Nice. He starts off relatively well: The message of Dove’s “real beauty” campaign is upbeat and inclusive:”All skin is beautiful when it is beautifully moisturised.” It hasapparently opened doors for women, helping them to accept a wider imageof beauty. Moves to some rather ugly insinuations: Trainer brand Reebok goaded consumers to take up active lifestyles usingsurreal commercials, which featured a huge beer belly chasing couchpotatoes down the street. The campaign was intended to make a point towhich all could relate. But the down-to-earth message failed to inspireand, when set against rival Nike’s focus on elite sporting stars, Reebokended up looking mundane and unheroic. […]
