Keira Knightley’s Fierce Eyebrows

by Christina Jones on July 10th, 2006

And when I say fierce, it is not the good fierce! I think Keira is very beautiful, but what makeup artist in her right mind would leave those brows in that kind of shape? I know, I am a little fixated on eyebrows sometimes, but I really think they make a tremendous difference in your looks and they are a simple thing to groom properly, and most often, when I find someone beautiful to be odd looking, it is their overgrown brows (Jennifer Aniston). Here is Keira on the July InStyle cover:

Keira Knightley on the July 2006 InStyle

This example is not the best one, but it is the only good one I could find of her looking straight on at the camera with no hair covering half her face. Her brows need to have about 1/4 inch plucked off of the inner edge of each one:

Keira's eyebrows examined!

They are beautiful eyebrows, they really are. They are just too darned close together. Here is a much worse eyebrow picture from the Pirates of the Caribbean premiere (from InStyle.com):

Keira Knightly at the premeire of Pirates of the Caribbean

In this picture, not only are her brows just too close together, the color is heinous. Heinous. Granted, I am not generally an advocate of bleaching your eyebrows, as it just too easy to over lighten them and then they really look bad, but, in this instance, if she is going to lighten her hair that much, please do something about those jet black, too close together caterpillars brows.

I don’t think her eyebrows are too too thick, but I agree they are definitely too dark in relation to her hair color (and I’m not talkin’ bout her roots! LOL). What’s really heinous in the 3rd picture is her eye make-up. What is she thinking? Does she even own a mirror? Maybe she looked better in person…yeah, that’s it, blame the photographer.

I think I’m all primed for Project Runway…lol.

    Jul 10, 2006 at 12:31 pm

No, actually her eyebrows are aligned correctly. The inner eyebrow starts at the bone of the nose, not the outside of the nose. This keeps the nose from looking too wide. She needs to grow her eyebrows closer together more. It’s just that the eyebrows are horrible uneven. One eyebrow is straight and the other is curved. If you look at her face, her face is uneven. One eye is higher than the other. Whoever did her eyebrows did them based on each eye,not her whole face. And the color, totally wrong. Yikes! I wish I could get my tweezers on her! ;)

  • Christina Jones
    Jul 10, 2006 at 12:38 pm

I respectfully disagree Elke. I think they are much too close together for her face (or anyones for that matter). Again, not so bad in this picture, but I see that issue in every picture I see of her. ;)

Leave Keira alone, she is amazingly beautiful. Although I will agree with Gail, they are a lot darker than would otherwise be considered normal with her hair, it’s something I really noticed on the big screen watching the new Pirates movie on the weekend, the darkness makes them stand out.

  • Christina Jones
    Jul 11, 2006 at 12:54 am

LOL I said she was “very beautiful,” what else do you want?? She just needs to get those eyebrows fixed up and she will be sheer perfection. Geesh. Men. Glad to see you are reading eBeautyDaily, Dunc! :)

Ha - you are probably right. :) But, thats what we do around here, I suppose. Thanks for the comment, Ali! :)

Are you insane? I dont know what kind of eyebrows you like, but I for one like seeing a woman with eyebrows that dont resemble a badly drawn line in the shape of a tadpole - that, is disgusting - why shave and take off half of your eyebrows to draw them on agian?
You obviously just have a very, very weird taste in makeup. Id love to see what you look like…

  • onlyme722
    May 21, 2007 at 4:48 am

you’re a moron. First of all…her eyebrows are not too close together. anatomically speaking, eyebrows should generally start just inward of the eye…(i draw faces, i study them a lot). If an eyebrow starts at any point other than the point of the eye (at the point nearest the nose) it looks odd and unnatural. She has thick eyebrows. She’s kept them mostly natural taking into consideration the general grooming she goes through for each movie or photo shoot.

Secondly…I have a huge problem with women taking the modern look too far…in other words..trying to turn natural features into what the media tells us what should be acceptable…according to the media thick eyebrows “are so 80s” but have you noticed the correlation between the 80s and what america expects from a “model” in the millennium (ie bullemia)??? A woman should work with her natural features…if she’s an actress maybe that means streamlining her features (ie plucking stray eyebrow hairs or wearing eyeliner, etc) but should she pluck her eyebrows so that they look identical to every mabeline model out there? NO!

You are clearly TOO ENTIRELY influenced by the media today, and have merely fallen victim. You have succumbed to believing in the paradigm which they have tried to present for the last 20 years Kiera Knightly comes along…absolutely beautiful (but to thin in my opinion which is likely a result of media pressure)..and you criticize her for not becoming yet another perfect model of the average covergirl model. I doubt you stack up all.

Such Audacity. I’d love to have her looks. Bold eyebrows and all :).

  • onlyme722
    May 21, 2007 at 4:55 am

me again, one thing i totally forgot in response to her eyebrows being too dark. You’ll notice that even women with multicolored natural highlights have darker eyebrows. Why? The Sun…on the top of the head, also, the eyebrows are the natural color, also..yes, hair coloring…but i think a huge reason for the obvious disparity in this photo is the photographer and the lighting. study photography, and maybe you’ll learn a thing or two ;).

  • lezlieprapra
    May 24, 2007 at 2:37 am

onlyme722 hit it right on the money. seriously, in that second photo i would almost say her brows are TOO far apart, which tends to look like the product of too much inbreeding. her brows are pretty prefect.

  • Ash
    May 28, 2007 at 6:47 pm

I partially agree with Elke (way up there)^^ in that her eyebrows are aligned perfectly but i don’t think that her face is uneven its just the way she was holding her face in this pose. you can do that with your eyes you know. i think the only thing wrong with her eyebrows is that they’re a little thicker than most would usually have and maybe they need a little more shaping but sometimes they like to have those thick kind of natural eyebrows for photo shoots, you know what I’m talking about? And at least they’re not like paper thin or drawn in and she hasn’t given in to that fad or anything.

  • Leah

    TOO DARN CLOSE?
In which PLANET? she is gorgeous… and frankly, many of us would KILL for eyebrows “too darn close” like those.

  • Depplover666
    May 31, 2007 at 4:33 pm

I personally love Keira’s eyebrows. Alright, so they may have some imperfections, but their unique. If everyone is so enchanted with angelina’s lips, why can’t they just accept Keira’s eyebrows as her own?
By the way, onlyme722 was right, but could you be anymore of a know-it-all?! No offense, really.

what? i think Keiras eyebrows suit her well.
    she could pull anything off.
she is gorgoes and suits anything and everything!
there is no way she should die them or make them thin… they make her look even more amazing.

    Jun 14, 2007 at 2:00 am

    gosh….

umm about the australian look - she’s not.

her eyebrows suit her… anymore off the inside and it’d just look wrong

some people don’t have perfect faces….

i have the same thing as her where one eyeborw is slightly more arched than the other….

but that’s not an imperfection, it adds character and a bit of interest.

if you’re going to go pick on someone’s eyebrows, pick on lindsay lohan’s - or take your pick from all those actresses with half their face covered in hair.

but don’t judge her on a particularly bad photo….

  • Elizabeth
    Jun 17, 2007 at 7:20 pm

I think Keira is a very beautiful person not just because of her physically beauty but her style and personallity as well. She always seems bubbley and her style is completely her. She doesn’t pretend to be someone else or dress and act like the “hot new trend” says. I think however she wants to look is fine with me and it’s no one else’s business.

  • Ana
    Jun 27, 2007 at 1:22 pm

I think she’s adorable, eyebrows and all :-) Even thick looks good. The only thing she might do is thin them slightly, but even that’s not needed.

  • Jules
    Jun 28, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Umm…… one eyebrow isn’t “arched more” than the other. She is RAISING an eyebrow. It is possible you know… to raise an eyebrows…

  • hmmm
    Jul 1, 2007 at 12:06 am

actually if you’ll notice, by looking at a lot of other photos of her….

one of her eyebrows is actually slightly more arched than the other.

unless she always raises one eyebrow

which would make me tired after a while, personally.

    not that it really matters.

    everyone has eyebrows.

if they were all the same, the world would be a plastic, ugly place.

  • P.
    Jul 6, 2007 at 2:45 pm

Keira has natural beauty and is very lucky because of that. And natural is always fashionable, it’s not like she’s got unibrow or anything. She’s beautiful, she can act extremely well and by all means, if she wanted to be a model, she would have become one ages ago. Why mess with perfection?

  • Caroline
    Jul 15, 2007 at 2:21 am

I agree, In that picture her eyebrows really affect her beauty. When I first read that I thought you were over emphasizing it, but then I googled her and found a great photo of her with much better shaped eyebrows. It makes me realise just how much eyebrows affect your face….which is why I let a professional do mine. I don’t trust myself with shaping my eyebrows.

  • Beth
    Jul 19, 2007 at 7:30 am

I’ve always been taught that eyebrows are ’sisters’- not twins. Most people will have differences in their brows. The trick is to minimize the differences and to focus on the strengths that the brows have. Overall, you want to bring balance to the face. I think Keira’s brows are perfect for her face. The only thing I’d like to see different is the uneveness balanced a bit more.

  • Jen
    Jul 19, 2007 at 10:02 am

she’s a beautiful woman. her eyebrows are fine.
i think people should stop running people down and quit looking for the negative sides in people. i have alwaysed found imperfections make a stunning person anyway.

  • Gabby
    Jul 30, 2007 at 11:30 am

ok first of all her eyebrows are fine ! second.. they shouldnt be the center of everybodys attention — so what if they’re not perfect and thirdd, i mean probably most people that are writing all of these neggative comments probably dont have perfect eyebrows either. just because shes a star doesnt mean that shes any different from you and me. who cares about the the colors && a little thickness
shes a beautiful women and shes a hero in my eyes

  • Angie
    Jul 30, 2007 at 3:10 pm

What’s up with women and ultra thin eyebrows. Dark thick eyebrows that are cleaned up look much better than sparse thin eyebrows. Keira is gorgeous.

  • Theresa
    Aug 17, 2007 at 9:01 am

Honestly I’ve read a few of your eyebrow blogs and you have a thing about eyebrows being too close together. Well I have a thing about eyebrows being too far apart. Keira’s eyebrows are right where they should be so that her nose does not look too wide. Sometimes aligning the brows right with the corner of the eye is not good enough because of the way the eyes are set. She already has a good 1 1/4 inches between them. Any wider and she’d look quite bad.

WTF does anyone realise that your having a conversation about eyebrows! To pick on someones looks is bad enough as it is……but to have a discussion ridaculing someone because of the shape of their eyebrows is just laughable! i think everyone on this page needs to take a look at themselves closely before they start picking apart this woman because of her eyebrows!!!!! theres heck of a lot more things going on the world!! if she wanted to die them purple and shave one of them off i really couldnt care less…..its her decission…..geez and you wander why so many people become obsessed with changing their body…..its because of people like you lot! xx

  • Shirin
    Jan 2, 2008 at 6:35 am

Finger width apart. Thats the proportionally correct measure at which eybrows should be separated. I don’t know WHY you would suggest she made them any further apart. It makes the pigly nose effect. Classic example: Hayden Panettiere and Amanda Bynes. Perhaps they’re copying oneanother?

  • Katie
    Jan 8, 2008 at 10:03 am

Eyebrows, eyebrows, eyebrows! Clearly she’s that stunning that all you can find to pick apart are her eyebrows. I’m sure she has her imperfections - if that makes you feel better. Noone is perfect, no matter what people think/say. I don’t really have any clues about the technicalities in eyebrow styling, but you should go with what suits you, not everyone suits the ideal style. Anyway, thumbs up to Keira, she’s got my support all the way, 100% xx

  • Lexa

The first thing I thought when I first saw a picture of Keira was “Wow! An actress with natural eyebrows!” I think they look great on her. I don’t understand the whole changing what you’ve got thing - I never pluck or shape mine as I think natural looks so much better. People have said mixed things about my own eyebrows, just like with Keira’s. Some say they wish they could have natural ones like mine, others say they look too full and like “caterpillars”. Mine are way darker than my natural hair colour - they are almost black, my hair is very light brown with natural blonde and copperish tints in it. The sun gives me salon effect highlights for free! So what do you think, would you criticise my eyebrows in the same way as Keira’s?

(Only pic of me I have which shows my eyebrows)

    Oh, wow.
    This is sad, really.
    Christina Jones, thank you,
    really, for noticing her imperfections.
Your not putting her down, your just pointing out
that she should get some work done with those
    brows.

Anyone who disagrees is probably really
ugly. And their opinion doesn’t matter.

And truthfully, please ladies, don’t defend your
nasty over grown eye brows by saying they
make you unique, or original, or more natural looking. Unkempt brows make you look like a
Neanderthal who doesn’t have access to a mirror.

Don’t make our world full of hairy bitches. Ew.

Go get those things plucked and shaped.

I think her eyebrows are beautiful, and I have never been a fan of thick eyebrows (..ever..)

Came across this page.. very interesting:
    http://shinymedia.headshift.com/kissandmakeup/images/images/2007/08/31/keira_knightley_eyebrows.jpg
It has a picture of Keira with her thick eyebrows, and a photoshopped picture of her with thin eyebrows. The thin eyebrows look so boring on her while the thicker eyebrows are dramatic, sexy and mysterious.

I think in the pics you have up there, definitely the colour of her hair and the colour of her eyebrows need some serious improvement. She’s come a long way..

    Just my 2 cents

  • Sarah

I really like her thick eyebrows! I dont think they are to close together either. Funny how whoever made this post is forgeting the fact Jeniffer Aniston dated Brad Pitt and Keira Knightley is extremely rich and famous which even if your eyebrows were perefect, that never going to happen to you so obsess over something else

Wow, some of your are way too mean. The point of this site/page is eyebrows. So you come here to read about eyebrows and then slam the person who wrote about them. Yes, talk about too much time on their hands. Go figure. You took something NOT personal and made it into a personal slam against the author here. Real nice.

she is just ugly everyone hates her in my school lol he thinks she’s the best and that because she played with johnney depp in a movie makes her popular but she is such a bad actress and thinks she can do anything because she is a star… and her eyebrows are freaky lol she is the worst actress in the world.. sry had to write that .. :)

    ouch

ugly?? no. sorry but that just doesn’t compute

it’s sad that a comment of that strain is even on this blog

it’s about eyebrows, for goodness’ sake

not about slamming someone you’re jealous of/indifferent to/i’m not you thank goosh

hele, where have you heard that she thinks she’s the best? where have you heard that that’s because she has played alongside johnny depp? and where on earth did you hear she thinks she can do anything just because she’s a star? i think you’ll find, if you ever read any interviews with her that she mostly moans about the whole thing and was fairly recently thinking about giving up on acting becasue she can’t cope with fame! i agree with eh, thank goodness i don’t just make decisions based on other people’s opinions!

I agree with onlyme. Why take something beautiful and make it merely pretty?
The “imperfection” of her eyebrows only serve to highlight the perfection of her skin and bone structure. Great post, I don’t even have time to read all the responses in the debate you inspired on beauty in the modern age. Bravo….

  • Hala
    May 1, 2008 at 12:49 pm

First of all, I would just like to say to everyone not liking her eyebrows, that really guys, its personal preference… She likes her eyebrows like that, then she should leave them like that, and not change them because people don’t think they look good.

Another thing with Keira Knightley in the pictures above is you have to looks at them… The first one is for a magazine (with lots of excess makeup and airbrushing), while the second one is just a premiere… so virtually no post-processing of the picture… I find that the makeup is really what affects the pictures here…

On the first picture, her eyebrows look uneven because she’s lifting the eyebrow on the right slightly, so it becomes more curved than her other one… I have the same thing, and I don’t even notice that i’m doing it sometimes… So all she needs to do is relax her eyebrows and forehead and you’ll see that her eyebrows match…

On the third picture, I’m pretty sure its the makeup that makes her eyebrows look weird… Although I agree her eyebrows are dark (like her natural hair colour) compared to the dyed colour, I’m pretty sure that her makeup artist or whoever did her makeup used a dark eyebrow pencil that was obviously wrong for her… It makes her eyebrows look almost dark grey! Not a very good look!

If you look at some of her pictures where she’s just walking down the street or shopping or whatever, she usually has much less makeup on with regards to her eyebrows, and so she looks better in those.

Although I really disagree with everyone saying that she needs to pluck more eyebrows… I find that her eyebrows are perfect for her, and they are not too close together… I personally draw and photograph alot of different people and I find that once you have too much gap between the eyebrows, you just start to look weird!

Personally, I find that the eyebrow “rules” that are given are not very practical… They might work on some people, but not on everybody… It really depends on the person and their faces (and the shape of their faces) as well as their eyebrow… I find that it is best, when plucking eyebrows, is to just “clean” them, so basically just removing the little hairs that are there above the eye and whatnot, and working with the natural shape of the person’s eyebrows from there (making them a bit thinner, or adding a little arch etc depending on personal choice, but keeping them more or less closer to the original eyebrow shape…)

I find that most people look better with their natural eyebrow shapes, and when people start trying to drastically change their eyebrow shapes, its just gonna look disasterous!

And just a comment for some people on this blog, thick eyebrows doesn’t mean unkempt eyebrows… Just because a person has thick eyebrows, doesn’t mean they don’t groom them or anything…

  • Avaelyn
    May 14, 2008 at 9:47 pm

I don’t really agree with any part of your analysis of her eyebrows. I am also fairly picky about eyebrows, and I think that a good set of eyebrows make a huge difference, but the fact that you think they are too close together?!! Are you kidding me? I mean, sure, everything can be put to personal preference, but I think that eyebrows should naturally start at the very corner of the eye, which hers do! Anything farther apart, and it starts to look silly, and completely unnatural. She has nice long eyebrows, which look much better than stubby little ones. With eyebrows, I figure you just need to clean up and shape the eyebrows you originally have, not try and make them something they aren’t. Her eyebrows are at least natural, not removed and then drawn on with a pencil.

    Hey Christina,
I indeed am a makeup artist, esthetician, and a nail technician in Florida. I often see overplucked brows. To have thick brows like this is what every woman dreams of. The look is intentional. Fuller brows make you look younger and not as severe looking and soften features and a sharp face. I encourage women to let their eyebrows grow in a little especially in the middle, all day long! Just so they can have fierce eyebrows just like keira knightley. You might want to reconsider your opinion and take a glance in the mirror at your own eyebrows. Are they thin and overplucked? Not the look that young women of today’s generation are going for. They’re going for a greener, more natural look in everything. So, you are wrong and outdated! Just not keeping up with what’s currently the trend in eyebrows and beauty.
