More Celebrating Beautiful Women
While I was thinking about women of color (which, by the way, means every woman out there!), I ran across this article from the Washington Post, reprinted at MSNBC.com. The article, titled Ethnic pageants restyle the beauty contest, is pointing out beauty pagents across the United States that are for young women of specific ethnic backgrounds, and are designed to “embrace their distinctive features.”
“The shows are “a validation of beauty and culture that’s not seen in the American mainstream” said Shilpa Dav, an assistant professor of American studies at Brandeis University.“It gives a lot of confidence to women because they are seeing other women who look like them, and their looks are validated,” said Dav, who helped produce a 1997 documentary of the Miss India Georgia pageant.”
Without getting too deep into this subject-as I probably could-there was something about this article that I noticed right away. They reference at least 8 different title holders, including Miss Vietnam USA, Miss India USA, Miss Liberia USA and Miss Ethiopia USA…..but not one picture to accompany the article. That might be one reason that the beauty and culture, as Shilpa Dav says, “is not seen in the American mainstream.” I think this desperately needs to change. What do you think?
