More on Dangerous Invasive Beauty

by Christina Jones on February 22nd, 2006

Plastic Surgery You know this is my favorite “love to hate” subject, hacking away on yourself in hopes that you will turn out to be preternaturally beautiful. Yikes. According to the NYTimes last week (sorry, am still catching up on stories from when my broadband was down last week…), South Florida has become a mecca for un-US-licensed doctors to meet up with women for “Tupperware-style” home plastic surgery parties. Doesn’t that sound like fun?

In the last few years South Florida has become the nation’s capital of black-market beauty treatments, in the view of many licensed doctors in the region who regularly see patients hoping to repair botched procedures. At parties like the one the clothing importer attended, or during private appointments in houses, hotel rooms, beauty salons and makeshift offices, people are getting everything from silicone shots to Botox, and in some cases plastic surgery, police and health department officials say.

You know I am a stickler for infection prevention, and this practice is dangerous from a great many angles, not the least of which is risk of infection. I won’t say I won’t ever have any plastic surgery done, but you can be darned sure I am having it done in a clean office, by a respected and recommended doctor!! Be careful out there ladies, “What does it matter. Who among us is without flaws?”
