Murad Acne Complex

by Christina Jones on July 30th, 2006

You may have seen this on television lately, I know I have - and have seen it at Sephora a lot too! Murad is Dr. Howard Murad’s skin care line, and the one shown above is his acne system. Although they have many more products for other skin types, this is the one I have been using of late, and I really like it. My favorite product in here by a long shot is the Clarifying Cleanser - I have rarely used a cleanser that left my skin feeling so clean. Part of this is because it is a good old fashioned soap (as opposed to a cream), and part of it is the addition of Menthol to the ingredients - it really leaves your face feeling clean and alive. The active ingredients in the cleanser are Salicylic Acid and Triclosan, both of which are effective in killing the bacteria that causes acne. My always present blackheads and whiteheads really do respond to this well. I am definitely going to keep experimenting with these products, they are effective and not terribly cost prohibitive.

Another thing I really like about the Murad products is that they are all labeled as to which step they are - Step 1 is Cleanse/Tone, Step 2 is Treat/Repair and Step 3 is Hydrate/Protect. I believe all of the products fit in one of these categories. All I have tried do, at any rate. I have some more of Murad’s specialty products in my cabinet (and in my purse), but will save those for later.

So it really gets rid of acne? Blackheads and all?

My blackheads are incredibly stubborn, but it is doing better than anything else I have used so far. I REALLY love that cleanser, there is something about it that truly feels like it is getting rid of them. Give it a try ;)

I myself have used this kit. I absolutely LOVE the Skin Perfecting Lotion, it’s oil free, very soothing and just smells so good to me.(Step3)Now, the Exfoliating Gel is a different story. (Step 2) It’s like fire on my face, it burned and itched my face so bad that I couldn’t use it! The good thing about ordering this kit from Murad is that they have three different versions of their Step 2: the original Exfoliating Gel, Anti-Aging which is a gel-lotion and has less salycilic acid then the original, and finally the Moisturinzing Formula which is moisturizing like a lotion and has even less salicylic acid then the rest. I LOVE the Anti-Aging & the Moisturizing Formula, I think the original is better suited to severe cases of acne. They also have a Spot Treatment which is amazing on the monthly pop-ups or the cyst-type ones that won’t go away! Once you start ordering from Murad, you will get a catalog that will introduce you to ALL of their amazing products! My personal fav is their Exfoliating Scrub that can be used as a mask:) I haven’t mentioned the cleanser because I don’t think it’s necessary to have Salicylic Acid around the eyes because it’s extremely irritating to them and cleansers don’t stay on the face long enough for them to work. I don’t believe in spending a lot of money on ingredients that are just washed down the drain! Since it comes included in the kit, I guess it’s O.K. But, I have yet to find any info that states that Triclosan has any effect on P.acnes, the main bacteria in acne that causes eruption, inflammation, redness & swelling. (Source: cosmeticscop.com) I’ve also been reading a lot lately about ingredients that irritate the face, and how they damage the face long-term. I pulled this off of Paula Begoun’s Website because she explain it much better than I. I do think Murad makes some great products, although I think the “Murad Acne Complex Kit” is more for us suffereing w/ blackheads, than those with pimples.

Ingredients such as menthol, peppermint, camphor, and mint are considered counter-irritants (Sources: Archives of Dermatologic Research, May 1996, pages 245–248; and Code of Federal Regulations Title 21—Food and Drugs, Revised as of April 1, 2001, CITE: 21CFR310.545, http://www.fda.gov). Counter-irritants are used to induce local inflammation for the purpose of relieving inflammation in deeper or adjacent tissues. In other words, they substitute one kind of inflammation for another, which is never good for skin. Irritation or inflammation, no matter what causes it or how it happens, impairs the skin’s immune and healing response (Source: Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology, November-December 2000, pages 358–371). And although your skin may not show it, or doesn’t react in an irritated fashion, if you apply irritants to your skin the damage is still taking place and is ongoing, so it adds up over time (Source: Skin Research and Technology, November 2001, pages 227–237).

Melissa, but the cleanser contains menthol, so then wouldn’t that make the cleanser not good for your skin?

Christina, is it cheaper to buy this through Sephora or through Murad’s direct website? I had no idea that Sephora sold this.

Any ideas on what minimizes the look of acne scars? All my life I have gotten acne on my chin and unfortunately, I am a picker because I cannot stand to see zits all over. Now I have scars. Have you heard of/used anything that minimizes that?

Yes. I pulled that part off of Paula Begouns website, she is the author of the book I have been reading, The Beauty Bible. I couldn’t explain it very well, which is why I didn’t say much about it. But that is just what she thinks, I’m not an expert. But I did use Murad for a couple years. And anytime that I called I talked to the same woman, she was awesome. If I wanted to add a mask or a scrub in with my kit, she gave me a deal. Or if I was ordering other things from Murad, she would have them sent out with my skits so I wouldn’t have extra S&H. I will look for her number, it should be in my old invoices (which I save) and post it for you tomorrow.

I’ve been using the Murad Acne Complex Kit for only two months, and I’m thoroughly satisified with the experience. I say this, because I was expecting the line to fail in clearing my skin as others I recently tried. And just like some of you ladies mentioned, I’m especially fond of the cleanser myself. It leaves my skin feeling healthy, clean, and refreshed. Really, it appears to rejuvinate it on the whole. I also like the products from the “Dull Skin” line. You can check them out everything at http://www.murad.com
