NY Times - 2008 is the “Year of the Drugstore”

by Christina Jones on December 28th, 2007

While I can’t say that I agree with the NY Times in proclaiming 2008 the “year of the drugstore,” they have offered up some worthwhile New Year’s resolutions, that really for the most part, can be called the mantra’s of eBeautyDaily:

1. Discard old, used beauty products - very important in order to prevent potentially very ugly bacterial infections!

2. Stop Smoking! Need I say more? Do as I say, not as I do. Ugh. I’m still trying though.

3. Unhand those pimples! - See number 1. Boy can handling your pimples cause BIG problems. Try one of those Zeno machines - a great purchase with some Christmas gift certificates. I see it comes in pink now - I might just succomb to that one myself!

4. More sleep, less stress - This is unbelievably important, not just for beauty, but for a sound mind and body.

5. Wear sunscreen - again, unbelievably important. Just do it. Integrate it in with your regular routine, using products with built in sunscreen (moisturizers, primers, foundations, lotions) - you won’t regret it. Check out my gorgeous great aunt for a reminder!

6. Simplify your beauty - this is one that doesn’t resonate so well with me, but I love lotions and potions and all the goodies. I will not be simplifying my program this year. :)

7. Wash your face - Every night! If you must go to bed with something on, try rareMinerals!

8. Rethink products that cost more than $30 - ROFL - sure. Again, Im a junkie. While I am fully aware that there are lots of great products out there that are inexpensive, truly and honestly, the products that I have found that really work - well, they cost a little more. There are some rare gems out there, but don’t hold yourself back just because of the money, if you don’t have to. That is the beauty of the internet, you can do some real research to see what works and what doesn’t before you make your decisions!

They forgot #9 - Moisturize! My favorite. After that nightly face washing, please don’t forget to moisturize. And moisturize from the inside out by drinking plenty of water every day. No, coffee and tea don’t count.

Thanks to Hsien for bringing up this subject this morning! *muah*

Great tips to go by for the New Year. Personally, I love tooling through my local Drugstore looking for fun or funky buys. A little money goes a long way, but there is a place for the more expensive stuff too. I think it’s all about balance. :)

    Best of luck in 2008!

Just discovered your site.. Love it! My cheap thrill has always been drugstore makeup and I think my daughter inherited this gene. I don’t think I should mention names of products but most cheap makeup go really well with Chanel lipstick - won’t compromise on the lips. I say No! no! no! :)
Thanks for your ideas and put more stuff out for women of color.

    Christina,

Number 4 is soooooooooo important and I think it’s safe to say that we all too guilty of having too much stress and too little sleep in our lives.

I felt the same way when I read the list in the Times. My biggest issue is with #8. While I’m all about simplifying, the few products that I’ve found that do the work and show results are not to be found in drugstores. I’d be happy to find a cream that doesn’t cost as much as my beloved Lancome Secret de Vie, but I like my face way too much to compromise.
