Sunscreen Is A Basic Beauty Item
I just don’t feel like I can leave behind the subject of basic skincare without at least a blurb about the importance of sunscreen in maintaining your beauty.
I am blonde, blue eyed and fair skinned, and when I was a child, there was no such thing as sunscreen. You romped at the beach on vacation until you were cooked like a lobster, then you put on a t-shirt and romped some more. I can remember several times being burnt to the point of blistering, all over my body (our family loved the beach!).
No amount of moisturizer or Botox or anything on the market can counteract the damage that sun does to your face, but having been raised with no sunscreen, it was only a matter of time before my lack of sunscreen use caught up with me.
In January of this year, I saw something on my nose that wasn’t right. It wasn’t a big ugly mole, but a very small, flat, smooth, circle of flesh colored skin. But it hadn’t been there before. I watched it, and went with my husband to his doctor’s appointment about 10 days later. At this point, my “thing” was still flat, smooth and flesh colored, but it was almost as big around as a pencil eraser. The doctor wanted to wait another couple of weeks before she biopsied it, but I told her to either get it off, or I was going home and doing it myself.
Well, it was the big C. Thankfully, not the scary Melanoma, but a Basal Cell Carcinoma. I promptly had surgery the next week, and have a nice 1.5 inch scar right down the center of my nose to show for it. And the doctor told me that at my age, it will be very likely that I will have another one within 5 years.
And he also told me to never leave the house without sunscreen. And I try very hard to do just that.
I will post a little later about specific sunscreens, but let me leave you, for now, with one word….Shiseido!

That’s scary!
Well, everyone (especially the fair-skinned ones) should really really use sunscreen.

You’re right–I learned the hard way, and I am afraid there is probably more to come. The scary part to me was that it was such an innocent looking thing…
